Saudi Arabia: A Country of History and Luxury

Saudi Arabia is known to be an affluent country, thanks to the millions generated by its oil industry. These millions enable the country to pay for its luxurious five-star hotels, world-class restaurants and other sky-scrapers. However, there is more to Saudi Arabia than its hot Arabian nights.

Thousands of people travel the country annually to visit Mecca which is Prophet Muhammad’s birthplace and the holiest Islam city. It is a tradition among devout Muslims to make a Mecca pilgrimage even just once in their lifetime.

A Glimpse Inside Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has so much to offer even for non-Muslim visitors. As Mecca is for Muslim devotees, Riyadh, the capital city, is for tourists who want to explore this affluent country. Start your journey inside Saudi Arabia by landing on one of the world’s largest airports. All around Riyadh are high-rise buildings, exceptional restaurants and many more to display the wealth of the country.

Get a glimpse of the country’s history at the National Museum’s eight galleries which chronicle the country’s developments, both human-made and natural. Here at the museum, you can see rock art fragments, Dilmun tomb depictions, models of Jeddah, Dir’aiyah and Medina and Mecca holy mosques. All these historical representations are accompanied and enhanced by small-screen cinemas, English and Arabic audio prompts and virtual tours.

Riyadh is where you can find the Musmak Fortress, which has been transformed into a museum, and also the Kingdom Tower building which is the tallest in the country. The building resembles a bottle opener and offers an observation deck and a sky-bridge for tourists.

For more of the country’s natural history, head off to Madain Saleh and its cemetery landscape where you can find 131 well-preserved ancient tombs. However, you are required to obtain a permit to go inside Madain Saleh which is situated among rock formations and sweeping sand dunes.

Your trip to Saudi Arabia would never be complete if you do not get a view of the desert. Head over to the Habalah which is a tiny deserted village. Take a cable car ride right into the desert and see miles of sand stretching far into the horizon. North from the station stop are some deserted homes with carved interiors and remnants left behind by former occupants.
